Japan METI technical standards for electrical facilities (magnetic fields)

Japan caps the power-frequency magnetic flux density from transformers, switchgear and power lines at 200 µT in spaces people occupy — the ICNIRP 2010 reference level, in force since 1 October 2011.

Scope

Applies to transformers, switches, similar equipment and power lines sited outside power stations, substations and demand premises, and to substations and switching stations themselves. Compliance is judged on the average flux density in the space a person would occupy near the equipment, with an exception for fields, forests and other places people rarely pass through. It is an equipment-siting rule, not an exposure limit for appliances or wiring inside a home.
