YSHIELD HSF54 shielding paint

Carbon-based water-borne shielding paint declared at 46 dB in one coat and 53 dB in two coats at 1 GHz, measured on flat samples to ASTM D4935-10 or IEEE Std 299-2006, and requiring a grounded conductive connection to also control low-frequency electric fields.

Declared attenuation

Each figure is the manufacturer's declaration for the frequency and the layer or coat count named next to it. The percentage is computed from the dB value, not quoted separately.

1 GHz, one coat
46 dB — removes 99.997% of the incident power density (1 part in 39,811 gets through)
1 GHz, two coats
53 dB — removes 99.999% of the incident power density (1 part in 199,526 gets through)

Test method

Manufacturer states measurement from 40/600 MHz to 40 GHz to ASTM D4935-10 or IEEE Std 299-2006, with the declared dB values quoted at 1 GHz. Production, quality assurance, emissions and health-relevant ingredients are monitored by TÜV SÜD; that certification covers the product, not a site installation.

Construction

Water-borne dispersion pigmented with carbon black and graphite, applied by roller or airless spray.

Typical application

  • Interior walls and ceilings
  • Floors under a covering
  • Exterior facades with a suitable top coat

What the figure does not cover

  • Conductive paint left ungrounded floats at the potential of nearby wiring and can raise the AC electric field in the room rather than lower it
  • The declared dB applies to a continuous coated sample: windows, doors, sockets and service penetrations are unshielded paths and usually dominate the installed result
  • Coats have to be continuous and of the declared wet film thickness; thin or patchy application loses several dB with no visible sign
  • A TÜV SÜD certification of the product is not a measurement of the finished room, and no attenuation figure predicts what a meter will read after installation

What these figures are

Every attenuation value on this page is the manufacturer's own declaration for a flat sample in a test fixture, reproduced so that products can be compared on the same terms. It is not a regulatory limit, not an independent test, and not a prediction of what a meter will read after installation — an installed shield is set by its weakest path, so the only figure that describes a room is a before-and-after measurement of that room.
